Slowly, the process began again. Down the hill. Load up. Up the hill. Hours passed. The explosions were relentless. As Reckless struggled up the ridges, the earth was blasted right out from under her feet. Alone, reaching the limits of her strength, she made trip after trip, bringing the shells to her marines. Her legs were trembling. Her coat was slick with sweat and coated with ash and dirt.

Reckless’s men were waiting for their ammo. But she needed a rest—badly. Her sides were heaving as she panted, and she was slick with sweat. On the way back to the ammo supply, Joe pulled Reckless off to the side. He unstrapped her saddle and rubbed her sore muscles. All around them, the sounds of the battle boomed, but for a few minutes, all Joe could see was the red mare. She leaned into the massage, standing quietly with her head down. Joe winced when he saw her head. The skin was rubbed raw from the bridle. He gave her some water and a heap of grain. “Good girl,” Joe repeated softly as she ate.

After half an hour, Reckless’s breathing had settled. She lifted her head, looking around her with interest again. She was ready to get back into battle. When Joe lifted the heavy packsaddle onto her sore back, she didn’t even wince.
